Form 1040 – Individual Income Tax Return

There are three versions of this form for filing personal (individual) federal income taxes with the IRS. 1040 Long Form, 1040-A Short Form, and the 1040EZ

Form W-2 – Wage and Tax Statement

Filed by employers who pay an employee $600 or more for the year. Includes cash and non-cash payments.

Form W-4 – Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate

Indicates to employer amount of tax to withhold from employee’s wages.

Form 1098 – Mortgage Interest Statement

Used by banks and other lending institutions to report annual mortgage interest over $600. Needed to claim the mortgage interest deduction on income tax return.

Form 1099 – Reporting Other Income

A series of documents used by individuals or entities to report income paid other than salary. Includes earnings from self-employment, interest and dividends, and government payments.

Publication 926 – Household Employer’s Tax Guide

Used by individuals who employ a household employee.

Publication 502 – Medical and Dental Expenses

Explains the itemized deductions for medical and dental expenses that can be claimed on Schedule A (Form 1040).

Describes the process the IRS uses to collect unpaid taxes including phone contact, levies, liens, seizures, and liquidation.

Publication 503 – Child and Dependent Care Expenses

Explains how to determine which dependent care expenses can be claimed for a credit on federal tax returns.

Publication 972 – Child Tax Credit

Explains the requirements for claiming the Child Tax Credit. Potential credit of up to $1,000 per qualifying child.

Form 8379 – Injured Spouse Allocation

Used by one (injured) spouse when a joint overpayment of taxes is made to offset a past-due obligation of the other spouse.
